I have never made a Monte Cristo Sandwich before and when I saw this post I couldn't resist trying it. I was thoroughly impressed! It had such good flavors!
White sandwich bread
Thin sliced deli ham
Swiss cheese, sliced
butter
2 eggs
1 C milk
2T flour
Strawberry Jam (or raspberry works too)
Powdered sugar
optional: Dijon mustard or maple syrup
Whisk flour and milk and then add in eggs and whisk until well-blended and place in a shallow dish. Dip one side of one piece of bread in egg mixture then place in a hot, buttered skillet. Then immediately build your sandwich on the bread in the pan starting with the cheese on the bottom, then the meat, then cheese again. Doing it in that order will help seal the meat in with the melted cheese. Then dip the one side of the other piece of bread and place it (the dip side up) on top of the cheese and cook til toasted and the cheese is melted. Then Sprinkle with powder sugar and serve with your choice of jam, maple syrup, or mustard. We liked putting our choice of side in a dish and just dip our sandwich in it. But you could also spread it on your sandwich and eat it that way.
