This cake is utterly fantastic!! This is my most popular recipe and cake request. I haven't found a single soul who doesn't like this cake. And that includes my chocolate hating husband! He LOVES this cake! Super easy to make and a crowd pleaser for sure! I found this recipe HERE
Ingredients
- 1 chocolate cake mix
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup canola oil
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 small box chocolate pudding (just the powder)
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 1/2 cup sugar
- Small tub Cool Whip, thawed
- 2 rows Oreo cookies, coarsely crushed
- 1/3 cup plus 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder
- 6 Tbsp. butter, softened
- 4 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 5 to 6 Tbsp milk or more if needed
- Make cake by beating all ingredients together for 2 minutes and bake in 3 8 inch round cake pans (can also be made in 2 9 inch pans instead) at 350 degrees. *Time will vary based on what size pans you use. Generally its about 20-30 min*
- Allow cake to cool in pan 10 minutes, then flip onto cooling rack and let cool completely.
- Once cakes are completely cooled, prepare the filling by beating the cream cheese and sugar together with a hand mixer until well blended. Fold in the cool whip until almost blended then fold in the crushed Oreos.
- In another bowl, make the frosting by whisking together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Then add the butter, vanilla, and milk. Blend with a hand mixer until smooth. Add additional milk if needed to make the frosting spreadable.
- To assemble the Cake: Place one round on your serving platter or cake plate. Top with 1/2 of the filling mixture and spread evenly. Top with the second cake round and top with remaining cream filling. Now place the third round on top. Then even out the sides so it is all smooth. Place in the freezer for about 10 minutes before frosting with chocolate frosting.
Tips and helps:
- I prefer this cake made the day before and well chilled.
- This freezes so great! I like to freeze individual slices wrapped in saran wrap. Then you can have a slice of cake anytime! It's a dangerous tip ;)
- This can be made in a vanilla version (and it's just as amazing as the chocolate version!) Instead of chocolate cake and pudding, swap out for vanilla. And use Golden Oreos instead. Then I use a basic buttercream for the frosting.
